The Leica CM is Leica’s elegant M-inspired compact 35 with high-grade optics, full automation plus manual control, and bad timing.
The Leica CM is a gorgeous, beautifully crafted (in Germany!) high-performance, compact 35mm camera that was clearly aimed at Leica M shooters who wanted a handy camera combining the point-and shoot convenience of autofocus and autoexposure, serious manual control options, and a great lens capable of M-level imaging. The Leica CM delivered all these things, but it had the misfortune of being released in 2004, just as the digital revolution was gaining momentum. As a result, only 20,000 were produced with the superb 40mm f/2.4 Summarit lens (plus an additional 15,000 or so Leica CM Zooms in 2005-2006, with similar specs, but fitted with the Leica Vario-Elmar 35-70mm f/3.5-6.7). The Leica CM is a great, if charmingly idiosyncratic, walk-around shooter’s camera.
