Photos and caption by the incredibly talented @juliiathompson x @karitraa • “What gender inequalities have you faced as a woman in the outdoors? There are many things we as women are told, and ones below I’ve experienced first hand. “You need to have a man around to be safe.” “Why do you need to wear makeup outdoors?” “It’s dangerous to show that much skin.” “Your wearing those clothes for attention.” “You look too clean to actually have hiked there.” “Women should be more put together, not dirty.” “Women aren’t strong enough, there’s no way she actually hikes that much.” “Who protects you?” “You women are so brave for being out here alone.” That last one may sound like a compliment, but I’ve never been told I’m brave for hiking with Chris. It shouldn’t be shocking to hike with just your female friends. As a photographer in a male-dominated industry, it’s also assumed that I’m not the creator behind my own account and images, especially because I’m in all my photos. We shouldn’t have to fight for recognition in this space, or have to explain to anyone how we choose to show our work. I’ve had people film me and my girl friends, or make sarcastic jokes about us taking photos, when I’ve never had that when I’m with a man. Be LOUD, wear makeup, don’t wear makeup, put on baggy clothes, get dirty, wear your favourite coloured leggings, take all the pictures you want, empower others, support your fellow women and f*ck what the negative people say. I want to hear your stories, what would you like to see change for women inequality? Let’s start a conversation.🤍 Thank you @karitraa for opening up a space to talk about all the issues we face as women. I’m incredibly grateful to be surrounded by powerful, strong, independent and fun women in my life. #girlswillbegirls #karitraa”
