since i was born, the surf industry has been through so many phases. from the 90’s “blue crush” era to a 2021 olympic debut, everything about he’e nalu has grown tenfold, providing space for more of everything surrounding a surfboard. yet with this growth, i’ve often found hawaiian language and perspective to be sorely absent from representation in main-stream surf culture. i believe the descendants of those who created surfing deserve equal space, and a voice, to celebrate and guide the future of their beloved tradition. that is why i am grateful to @roxy for giving @maineikinimaka and i the support to honor and perpetuate our ancestral practices of he’e nalu and ‘ōlelo hawai’i. we hope it will inspire you to learn more about the hawaiian roots of surfing. mahalo to all who made this possible 🤍 @oakstproductions @serenalutton @silkymerman @lilyyday @michenbaum @josiemireless & so many others
