“In the climate of Ukraine, most plants shed their leaves during the colder months of the year. There are a number of light-sensitive receptors in leaves, where photosynthesis occurs. Leaves always go towards the light; they see the light somehow. Vision for plants is a sensitivity to light. From autumn until spring, when leaves are gone, we may say they “close eyes” — they go to sleep.” Back in May, Manifesta 14 Prishtina participant @truealevtina began her commissions surrounding the conflict in the Ukraine. Her series continues with the fourth piece of the series. In her drawing, Kakhidze draws our attention to plants who woke up with the first days of spring in Ukraine. When the whole-scale invasion of Ukraine started on the 24th of February, the plants were in deep sleep. When they woke up – when they “opened their eyes” – the plants woke up to ruins in cities like Irpin, Bucha, Mariupol and others where the hostilities had taken place. The fifth and final commission of the series will be released soon.
