#OnThisDay in 1996, Aleutian Islands World War II National Historic Area was established. This unique unit in the National Park Service is managed in conjunction with the Ounalashka Corporation, who own the land and visitor center. The Ounalashka Corporation also represents the survivors of evacuated and interred Unangax̂ from the villages of Biorka, Kashega, and Makushin, who were never allowed to return home after the end of World War II.
