For #GivingTuesday this year, Ashley, a Yakima mother of three, is encouraging people to donate a different kind of gift - the gift of life. Avin, her son, was diagnosed with liver cancer at age six and needed a liver transplant. Seattle Children’s suggested Avin’s family utilize social media to find a potential living donor.
“I knew about at least 25 people who submitted interest in becoming a living donor and the response was incredible,” Ashley told King 5. On any given day, the CDC reports over 100,000 adults and children actively waiting for organs.
“The liver is an amazing organ that can regenerate,” Dr. Pamela Valentino, medical director for the Liver Transplant Program, said. “An adult can donate a small segment to a child or can donate up to half of their liver to a teenager or an adult and the liver can regenerate and the tissue can grow back within weeks to months.”
