I was doubtful at first, but yes you can paint laminated Ikea furniture. First, lightly sand all surfaces you want to paint with a sanding block. Wipe down with a tack cloth. Prime each Billy bookcase with a shellac-based primer. I used a sponge brush to do this. The primer dries quickly so work fast. With a small foam paint roller, apply the paint of your choice. I chose Duke Gray from Magnolia Home paint. Other tips: Before painting, I added a toe kick to the bottom of these units. I also added a strip of trim where the sides of each unit meet to make them appear connected. Add knobs, and this instantly looks like a custom piece. This was such a quick and easy way upgrade these bookcases!
