(pt.2) I have so many favorite stories with my dad: rocket ship rides to bed, soccer games calling him coach, trampoline jumps after dinner, four-wheeler rides at the cabin, and the most humiliating dance moves. He never missed a tennis match and always checked in on me, “are you happy?”
He came from very humble beginnings and worked his way to financial success. Picking up every single dinner tab where he’s present, giving four-year college educations to kids that aren’t his, cars to strangers he finds are in need- my dad was buying homes for others in his thirties and has carried that same humility he was born into with him along the way. Dad would never let us know just how much he has given in his life. Even when I try, I can’t get close to any sort of number, but I have seen enough 100 dollar bills passed to expecting mothers behind the registers at grocery stores and in n outs to get a glimpse.
It’s not about the money to him, Dad lifts burdens, creates opportunity, adds humor, and gives people a chance. He is the most positive, generous, and loyal person I know; as his daughter, I’ve been lucky enough to have been given and experience all of the above, over and over again.
How do you find a birthday present for the guy who has it all? Or write a tribute when you’re only beginning to comprehend his accomplishments? I’m not sure, but my dad is my hero. He’s a lot of people’s hero and I love that about him.
Happy Birthday Dad.
