Texas @govabbott has poured over $4 billion into Operation Lone Star, billed as a border security plan that includes money for barriers. It also funds patrols for thousands of soldiers and orders DPS to arrest migrants for trespassing on private land. As part of Operation Lone Star, Texas has erected nearly 2 miles of permanent border wall. All of it is in the highly populated Rio Grande Valley. The state also installed 58 miles of chain-link fence and 42 miles of concertina wire. Despite the effort, the number of migrants caught crossing the border reached record levels in the last year. Dallas Morning News journalists spent several days in August near Eagle Pass, observing DPS officers by land and by air and talking with migrants to gain more perspective of what's happening at the border.
