“You’re so lucky he helps you with that!” Hmm.... This is often the type of response I hear when B does anything to share the massive responsibility of breastfeeding with me, indicating that we consider breastfeeding to be the mother’s job, only.. and receiving any support makes her lucky and an exception. It’s a shared responsibility. Why wouldn’t it be? Why shouldn’t it be? Obviously, there are many aspects of breastfeeding that the partner cannot take on but to the extent that they can, there’s no reason they shouldn’t. There are many moments in which a partner can offer support to feed baby. Some moments for us include: 1. Cleaning pump parts 2. Charging the pump after each use 3. Ensuring there’s enough food and water for me and it’s in reachable distance 4. Holding the Milk bag as I pour milk or washing bottles 5. Having my back when I pump or feed in public Most mothers who stop breastfeeding before they want to, cite lack of support as a key reason. If you’re in a position to offer a breastfeeding mama some support, do it. It has a huge impact on her health and baby’s health. Mamas need their villages back. PS: I’m using the @willowpump GO, link in bio for $$ off.
