Jean Prouvé, Pivoting sun-shutter facade panels, apartment building, Conakry (Atelier LWD Lagneau, Weill, Dimitrijevic, architects), 1953.
The Sun-shutter/ventilator unit was part of the climate-adaptable systems designed by Jean Prouvé in the 1940s. With its fixed or adjustable-angle blades, it could be added to existing buildings, while in a project like the one at Conakry it was an integral part of a facade whose directional aluminum blades were of unequal widths. The directional Sun-shutters in light alloys not only ensured a permanent ventilation but also dimmed the light without obstructing the view. The models designed for Conakry are made of three small-sized elements and of a central one forming a sun shield. In the bedrooms, they were completed with glazed elements.
