3 days ago, Leighton rescued a kitten named Kif from @furryfriendsla We were told this was a 6 month old, healthy boy. On arrival, all of the cats were housed outdoors in cages, exposed to all elements. There were strays, bugs, and extremely inhumane conditions. We felt compelled to rescue this kitten to give him a better life because we knew he and the other cats would die in this facility. The owner of the “business” told us Kif had a sister that was recently adopted as well. As we were finishing adoption papers, Kif went to the litter box and showed his first sign of being sick because there was diarrhea, and was tested positive for Giardia. The owner, Gene, insisted all the cats were healthy, administered medicine to Kif and provided us with extra. That same night, Kif started to bleed from both ends, and was rushed to the vet to receive emergency fluids for dehydration. The veterinarians said he was showing all signs of FPV (Feline panleukopenia virus). They were unsure if his lack of appetite was from medication or another variable, so he was sent home to be monitored and tested the next day. At this point, Gene informed us his sister tested positive for FPV and was sent back to the “shelter.” For those unaware, FPV can linger on surfaces for a year so every cat at that location is likely infected and at risk of death. I don’t have enough words to explain how difficult this experience has been, but I want to emphasize we prioritized Kif’s health and there was no instance of him returning back to that graveyard, no matter how expensive. This business owner is cruel, heartless, a liar and took zero accountability for Kif’s death. We believe Gene knew Kif was infected and upcharged us on adoption fees because he knew we’d help at all costs. There are entire text chains between us where he refunded immediately to not speak up on his business, and he admitted Kif was exposed to FPV on the 10th. Today, he passed peacefully and was euthanized as recommended by the vet. They said no treatment could save him at this point and this was the most humane way. I won’t be satisfied until @furryfriendsla is shut down forever. Goodbye Kif, we love you <3
