Tucked deep in a courtyard among the tree-lined residential streets of Mexico City's San Miguel Chapultepec neighborhood is the sprawling studio of California-bred artist and @masagaleria cofounder @brian_thoreen. In every corner are Brian’s large sculptural works: tables made of ribboned black neoprene rubber and hand-hammered copper, vessels of glycerin and of molten glass, erotically bulbous, asymmetrical blown-glass sculptures Brian created for the experimental glassmaking collective @vissiovissio. “I like to find new ways to use materials,” said Brian. “That’s the big driving force.” Our latest edition of “Sourcing Slow,” brings readers inside the working studios of Mexico City artists and designers creating works for the upcoming exhibition of nomadic gallery and Slow collaborator MASA, launching this week at New York’s Rockefeller Center.
