Here is my #queerhairstory
I came out when I was young. I remember just saying fuck it. I don’t care what anyone thinks; I need to be who I know I am inside.
I went on this journey of feeling like I had to prove that I was gay enough.
I cut off my hair and tried to shed everything that represented the old me.
One of the first salon jobs I had was in a high-end salon that I couldn’t wait to work in.
The team was made up of gay men and beautiful straight women. I was the only queer-looking female there.
I had short hair ( think Miley Cyrus meets Tegan and Sara ) covered in tattoos and stuck out in this space.
While working there, I just never felt like I fit in. I thought I needed to shrink myself.
I ended up being let go because I was told I didn’t fit into the feel and looked of their salon. They actually paid me to leave.
I want to remind you this was a time in the industry when it was still considered unprofessional to show your tattoos, especially as a female.
This broke me, and I considered leaving the hair industry all together.
Flash forward to a few years after that. I was working for a big beauty company teaching hairdressers who would then work for that salon.
At one point, their entire team had been trained by me.
That experience was a driving force when creating DTH. When I met @davidbosscher we knew we wanted to fight for our community to have safer working environments in this industry.
We want to know your story! Tag us in your story!
Let's work on bringing our LGBTQIA2S+ hair community together and stronger.
