New narratives require new narrative systems. And Hollywood needs systemic change. We started MARGINAL with an eye toward what a new kind of studio would look like if you started from scratch – in 2025. In a world with global video and audio streaming platforms – we believe that creative diversity and intersectionality in popular storytelling genres, on the one hand, and data and technology mastery, on the other, are the twin pillars of the new studios that will lead the next 100 years of storytelling. While we have publicly been building the creative pipeline (movies, tv, animation, audio), we have quietly and privately been building the technical infrastructure. Today, we announce a major leap forward to accelerate our technology ambitions, our first acquisition: FRESNO. Fresno is a Social Capital backed startup, founded and led by the brilliant @iamrobgoldberg, who has also become a good friend. His investor base, team and technology is solid gold. Storytelling sits upstream in culture and, as such, we have the opportunity to create catalytic change in society by normalizing otherness. At the same time, the growing size of the film/tv, audio, interactive, and gaming markets by 2030 will be in the $1T ballpark (yes with a T). Add Web3 onto that and the new studios of the future (there will be many) will be unlike anything we've seen to date.
