Let me paint this picture. This photo was taken when I was 16 years old wearing a pair of Carmine Jordan 6’s (my ONLY pair of J’s at the time) that my boy @king_drew_ftd_ got me in the ‘92 LA riots. As I turn 46 today, reflecting on the last 30 years, here’s what I would say to my younger self... What’s up, dude? I see you out here trying to be Like Mike in your Carmine 6’s. I know right now basketball has been very frustrating and there’s been many times when you’ve wanted to quit. Right now, you’re trying to fly like Mike. But one day, you’ll fly WITH Mike. Right now, you’re holding on to a pair of Jordan’s, wearing them down, unsure when or if you’ll ever get another pair. But one day, you’ll give hundreds of pairs away to kids who are just like you. Right now, you’re struggling to make the team. But one day, LA basketball culture won’t move without you. Right now, you’re working hard to get noticed. But one day, people around the nation will know your name. Right now, you’re doing it to get a few looks. But one day, you’ll do it strictly for the love. Right now, you may not see the vision clearly. But one day, you’ll realize the writing has always been on the wall. Or should I say, the shadow has always been on the ground. When it’s all said and done, your name will be mentioned amongst the greats. So, keep going, kid. Your journey is far from over.
