#tbt There aren’t many clips of me dancing on here. A lot of people sort of know I’m a dancer, but have never seen me dance. Some don’t even know. Here is a little gem that I got permission to post from the choreographer, Lar Lubovitch.
This clip is from the beginning of the final section of “Nature Boy,” originally created on @hubbardstreet in 2005. Creating it with Lar was a huge deal for me. I was at one of the heights of my career but personally I was very lonely and depressed.
Kurt Elling’s version of “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes” still hits deep in my soul. I’ve heard many other versions but this is the GOAT. If you have a chance check out the full recording: Kurt Elling: Live At Green Mill Jazz Club, Chicago 1999 @kurtelling
I’m a sensitive, sentimental guy and I genuinely thought at the time I would never find the love I envisioned for myself. Little did I know the rollercoaster of love and relationships ahead of me. I’m thankful for the journey I’ve been on and the love I have in my life.
I very rarely enjoy watching myself dance but in this clip I see the culmination of so much and it makes me feel proud. I think that what I learned to do with my body and spirit is beautiful.
My dancing has never been about fireworks. I don’t have high extensions or beautiful feet. I can’t turn or do tricks like other people. (The list of self loathing goes on and on). As a result I’ve always thought less of myself. But I have tried more recently to learn to appreciate what I can do and the things I have to offer. What you see here is a prime example of that.
I will be forever grateful to Lar for creating this, to have a record of it and to be able to share it.
