Excerpt of Radiohead performing “Jigsaw Falling Into Place” from Scotch Mist - a film made for New Years Eve ‘07 directed by Adam Buxton and Garth Jennings.
What is Jonny Greenwood playing here? Worried that his ondes Martenot might get damaged on tour (an ondes Martenot is an early electronic instrument played by moving a ring along a wire with sounds reminiscent of a theremin), Jonny turned to the company Analogue Systems for a replacement in the early 00s.
According to The King of Gear, he originally obtained one of their synthesizers in 1999, using it on Kid A and Amnesiac. When he needed a replacement, rather than building a standalone synthesizer, Analogue Systems built a CV-controller to be used in conjunction with a modular synthesizer. He tried Analogue Systems’s first prototype in April 2001, and after a few modifications production began.
The French Connection creates no sounds of its own. Instead, it outputs CV which can be used to control parameters of modular synthesizers. To create ‘Martenot’ sounds, the player places a finger through the ring suspended below the physical keyboard allowing the player to glide smoothly between notes by moving the playing hand from left to right, creating a natural vibrato in the process, while a pressure resistant wooden button offers control of the amplitude.
He has a few modules (RS95, RS180, RS100) in his ‘The Apprentice’ cabinet for the performance, and is using a patch of a VCO and a VCA, both controlled directly by the French Connection.
