When it comes to height, the Douglas Fir has few rivals. Towering over the chimneys at Cragside, these magnificent evergreens were planted by Lord Armstrong during the craze for big conifers in the 19th century. The trees have a complex plumbing system, which no doubt would’ve appealed to the visionary Victorian inventor.
