Neurosurgeons use drills for almost every surgery we perform. We use it to access the brain and the spine, place screws, using different drill bits depending on the structure we are exposing. As a skull base surgeon, almost half of my surgeries can be spent just exposing the critical structures at the base of the brain. We use specialized drills when working on blood vessels and nerves, to keep them healthy while giving us access to critical corridors in the brain.
