“You can borrow flour, but you have to make your own bread”
I’m a sucker for self help books, but began finding them ridiculously repetitive (and out of touch with reality a lot of the time), so have been seeking out new literature to engage, inspire and get me thinking.
This book is SUCH an easy and fun read, filled with examples of work and personal journeys of all of the great artists, inventors, CEOS and designers across all industries.
Key learnings I took away from the book:
🕵🏽♀️ The most creative are those insanely in tune with themselves and almost deaf to the projections and critique of others.
Inspired by previous work - yes, but also aware of their personal talents, strengths, experiences AND shameless about bringing them to the table every single time.
🌳 Nature is our greatest teacher and source of inspiration
I really did not know that while travelling in Canada, Clarence Birdseye ate some fish that had been naturally frozen and later thawed (he essentially borrowed natures idea!)
❌ All great inventions/accomplishments are built on rejection.
I also had no idea James Dyson was rejected SO many times and had to find success in Japan before the UK took him seriously and bought into his idea - he’s now worth 7.6Billion
I loved the emphasis placed on THE JOURNEY learning from “mistakes” and using them as an opportunity to investigate/think outside of the box.
🖼 Life and work really are art - we are all the artists with our own stories to tell.
