On show during Unseen 2022: Pierre Liebaert — During Unseen (16-18 September 2022), @Archiraar Gallery will show work by the belgian photographer Pierre Liebaert (Dutch ⤵️). The Brussel-based artist often immerses himself in longterm projects and occasionally, his photographs are accompanied by film, music, audio recordings or texts. For his series "Je croix aux Nuits” ("I believe in the nights”), the artist captures rituals that celebrate the ways in which we mark different phases within a year or from one year to the next, for instance a demarcation by seasons or the lunar cycle. Liebaert is particularly interested in the yearly recurring tradition of the carnival. The disguises, masquerades and processions, as well as some of the more fragile traditions that are a part of these festivities. In this photograph, we see a person covered in flour or ash, which might be a reference to Ash Wednesday, a Catholic day that marks the beginning of the 40-day Lent (fast).
