Skiing is somewhat simple. You prepare and then you perform. The better you prepare, more often than not, the better you perform. To add to this clarity, when ski racing there is even an unbiased mechanism to gauge your progress- a timer.
Being a parent, and bringing a life into this world is not that simple. Prepared as I am/was, there is always so much out of my control. For this last particular hurdle- birthing my son- I did as much as I possibly could and then I had to let go.
Hmmmm.... I am writing this in the dark in the maternity recovery room as I listen to my sweet babe’s squeaks as he slumbers. And a new thought arrives:
Then again, maybe skiing/racing and life have more in common than I first thought. I perform best when I prepare relentlessly, but ultimately I have to surrender to the process.
Some call it fate.
I call it trust.
To move forward, in beautiful moments, and in moments of utter hardship, we must trust.
As I kick out of the proverbial “start gate” of motherhood again, I will continue to prepare and do my best to perform, all the while honing my perpetual trust. In parenting. In life. And in love.
