Children relate the things they learn to things they have experienced and this manifests in deeper learning and understanding! Hands on experiences such as those often utilized in the Montessori method are perfect for this!
Here are some ideas:
✨ Go on a walk where your toddler or child navigates.
✨ Go to the grocery store and talk about the things you see. Money is especially good for early math
✨ Take a step outside and see the changes in weather each day
✨ Visit a library and read a book if you are able
✨ Look at the fish at the pet store (we do this one all the time)
✨ Tally the car colors in your neighborhood
✨ Take them out of the car seat while you pump gas
✨Cook something simple together
✨Care for a family pet or relative
Hopefully by sharing this, I can convey how experiences are equal to formal learning!
Of course, all of these experiences are rooted in privilege. The privilege of having time, the privilege of having patience and energy, the privilege of having money for gas just to go places. This I will always acknowledge, especially knowing that we have struggled to keep up with activities and experiences of late due to the current economical climate.
What experiences have you shared of late? ☺️
