🔆How Not To Drown In A Glass Of Water x Angie Cruz🔆
Thanks @flatiron_books for my gifted ARC. 💛🙏🏽
I was going through a very emotional rollercoaster that was on the downslope when I decided to pick up #HowNotToDrownInAGlassOfWater. I think the title spoke the loudest to me bc I felt like I was drowning and needed a life vest thrown my way. I needed to know that someone else survived too. This book was that life vest; something to hold on to so I could catch my breath. It takes on a unique approach of storytelling in which a 56 y/o Capricorn Dominicana named Cara Romero has to attend 12 Senior Workforce Program sessions with a case worker in order to continue to receive unemployment benefits while she tries to find a job.
Cara reminded me of how much I love listening to more seasoned women talk about their lives and all the happenings around them. She is a chatty Cathy and a spiller of all the tea. I love me some Cara Romero though. Not just bc she’s a #Capricorn like me 😝 but bc she knew her strengths, was able to identify where she needed to grow and improve, was a believer that things would get better and work themselves out, and was caring to a fault. She had her blind spots but what I loved is how Cruz managed to have Cara become so introspective throughout her sessions which also showed her wisdom and empathetic qualities. We never get dialogue from the actual case worker. We simply have to imply what is being asked or said by her through Cara’s responses. I found this to be extremely clever and it heightened my experience while reading.
What Cruz manages to do with language in this book is incredible. If you are bilingual, esp in Spanish, or have any working knowledge of grammar and syntax in Spanish, then you may pick up on this. Through Cara, Cruz is able to capture the essence and syntax of the Spanish language while one is speaking in/translating to English. It spoke to the complexities of language w/o diminishing intellect. It elevated not only the way I connected to Cara but was a testament to Cruz’s fantastic writing abilities in this novel.
