In 1983, Baldwin Lee left home in Knoxville and drove 2,000 miles across the South shooting every person and scene that spoke to him. But once back in the darkroom, he realized that his favorite subject was Black people. So he left again and again over seven years, burning through four cars and producing 10,000+ images of Black life in rural southern America. I wrote about Lee and 88 of those images that constitute his new monograph for @bjp1854. It’s a mesmerizing portrait of people forging a life in a country that refuses to love them as its own.
