• PROFILE SERIES • Luca Padua @lucapadua Every season I see new faces in the water, a new generation is starting to show up at the line ups of Mavericks. You just never know who will be the next big name in Big-Wave Surfing. Luca Padua is proving to be the-one who has come to stay, and the-one we are keeping our eyes on for this next generation to push the limits of the sport. He is a Half Moon Bay local, born and raised. His first experience with the wave was at 13 years old and he has been surfing there ever since. Luca has taken Mavericks to another level. We already see Luca in heavy waves and a serious approach to the left. Just a select crew of big-wave aficionados have been focusing their attention on the left and when it's big, there's no margin for errors. Lucas says, "I’m really good at using fear to my advantage. Big waves are scary, but I love putting myself in dangerous, scary positions, because that turns into adrenaline, and that adrenaline just makes me want to huck it on big waves. It comes down to preparation. I train so hard for every situation that I guess it makes me confident I can always get myself out. I dunno. I haven’t been in a position yet where I was terrified, to be honest. I’ve been uncomfortable for sure, especially taking a 30-footer on the head. But this is truly what I love to do. Even without the media or the sponsors I’d still be chasing what I’m chasing now."
