With the exciting announcement of Japan opening their borders to tourism on October 11th, I wanted to share with you one of the most magical fairy tale villages in Japan 🇯🇵 Save this for your next trip! 📌 Shirakawa-go (白川郷) is a village located in the Gifu prefecture of Japan and it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995. They are known for their traditional “gasshō-zukuri” houses with steep thatched roofs. This architectural style was designed to help withstand the heavy snow that falls during winter. Best time to visit: The village looks picturesque all year round but the most popular times are Autumn and Winter. We visited during Fall and I was blown away by the foliage! 🥺🍁 I would love to come back during winter when it snows and the village turns into a snow globe ❄️ Getting there: Traveling to this village can take several hours depending on where you are based and requires multiple transportation modes. Make sure to do your research and plan your routes in advance! I recommend checking their official website for transportation recommendations and options https://www.vill.shirakawa.lg.jp/en/ Alternatively, you can also rent a car and drive there yourself! Just keep in mind that you will need an international drivers license and in Japan, they drive on the left side of the road.
