MEMORIES FROM MUNGO ~ The traditional meeting place of the Muthi Muthi, Nyiampaar and Barkinji Aboriginal Nations; Mungo is a land that has experienced profound environmental change; quite literally transforming from lake to desert over thousands of years. It’s also a land that has changed the way we think about Australia’s ancient history; most notably through the discovery of Mungo Man – the oldest human remains ever found in Australia – and Mungo Lady the oldest known human to have been ritually cremated. In 1999 Mungo Man was found to have lived over 62,000 years ago; a radical conclusion that debunked scientific estimates of Aboriginal people first being in Australia 20,000 years ago and bringing into question much of what was known about early human migration. Mungo was a destination that had “been on my list” for many years. I’d first come across it as a potential shoot location for a fashion campaign and it had stuck in my mind ever since. Through this research I knew a little about the park’s otherworldly landscape and rich history, however, I’d soon come to understand that the only way to fully realise Mungo’s significance was to visit it in person. @destination_nsw
