Hayden Payne, more commonly known as Phase Fatale, impressively transformed his multidisciplinary musical background into a techno-focused project that has earned him the reputation of a techno innovator, both for the broad spectrum of dystopian, gritty, and industrial-laden electronics included in his DJ sets, as well as his deep understanding of synthesis and sound design in his own productions. Listening to him perform, there is no question about how he won the admiration of some of the most respected institutions in the electronic music world as he established himself as a core resident at Berghain and Khidi. Equally gifted in the studio, Payne’s New York roots are evident in the industrial sound of Phase Fatale’s releases, such as in his well-received album Scanning Backwards; but he also leverages his ties to the post-punk and goth-rock scenes as witnessed in his collaborative project ‘Soft Crash’ with Imperial Black Unit’s Paolo Bozzi. And with the creation of his BITE label, which is designed to present artists who operate beyond the borders of the common preconceptions of techno, the Berlin-based DJ has established an open platform to push techno into its next evolutionary state, cultivating a new razor-sharp sound imprint.
