Revolutionary Japanese fashion designer Issey Miyake, famed for his fabric innovation and bestselling perfumes, has died in a Tokyo hospital at age 84. Per Miyake’s wishes, there will be no funeral or memorial service.
Miyake was one of the first Japanese designers to show in Paris. He was part of a wave of designers that put Japan on the fashion map in the 1970s, and was the founder of the Miyake Design Studio and the Issey Miyake Group.
Known for his pleating technique, a groundbreaking method by which pleats are applied after the fabric is cut and sewn, the designer’s reinvention marked a revolutionary departure from traditional process.
As well as his impact on fashion, Miyake was vehemently pro-peace and a vocal opposer to nuclear power.
May he Rest in Peace and his legacy live on. 🕊
