This week, I was thrilled to attend the #AlbieAwards hosted by the @ClooneyFoundationforJustice. The awards celebrate changemakers who are standing up for justice around the world, and it was an honor to present the lifetime achievement award to their namesake, Justice Albie Sachs. Here’s a little taste of his remarkable story. In 1952, after being arrested at a protest against apartheid, a 17-year-old Albie asked the first question that so often leads to true leadership: Why? Why were his peers of color were always harassed, terrorized, and threatened? Why couldn’t his country see the humanity of all of its people? For the rest of his life, he dedicated himself to seeking those answers. He was threatened, jailed, and even exiled for nearly a quarter-century. A car bomb took his arm and an eye—but not that question burning inside of him: Why can’t South Africa be free? And when his friend Nelson Mandela was freed, Albie returned to his country to serve on its court, write a new constitution, and bring South Africa closer to the place he always knew it could be. That, to me, is leadership. It’s not about how many clicks and retweets you get. It’s not about money or age or race or faith—it’s about making people feel bigger, not smaller. It’s about lifting people up. It’s about bringing out the greatness in others. That’s what we celebrated this week. And it’s up to us not just to hear that story, but to ask “Why?” about the injustices we see all around us today—and set ourselves toward changing them.
