Growing up Mexican-American, there always was a notion of not knowing where you belong. There’s a saying in Spanish that reads “Ni de aquí; ni de allá”, which roughly translates to I’m neither from here; nor there. Whenever I was in school I was too “ethnic” to be seen as an equal, but when I was at a Mexican event, I was too American since I didn’t speak Spanish fluently. It was always an odd situation and place to be in, and whilst growing up I became ashamed and embarrassed of my Mexican Heritage to comfort others uncomfortableness of the unknown and foreign. It took me a while to start loving my Mexican Heritage once again and to be super proud of it and not give a FUCK about what anyone has to say or thinks. Cinco De Mayo is one of those holidays I cherish ever since I was a toddler. The beautiful story of the people from Puebla defeating the French and claiming their independence from them shows true valor and power, which in return I have applied to my life and to my drag. This is a nod to my younger self and also to all my Mexican-American folks out there that feel that they don’t belong, just know they you belong and you should be proud of your truly enriched, diverse culture.
