When I was twenty years old my grandfather, with whom I share a love for photography, gave me his Rolleiflex. I remember feeling the magic of looking down through its viewfinder for the first time and being totally in awe.
I shot and developed one roll which was very exciting and at the time prohibitively expensive. So, I put the camera down with every intention of picking it up again when I felt I could afford it.
A couple weeks ago my friend Nick Shamblott lent me his Pentax 67 for a shoot and when I looked though the viewfinder I was reminded of that same magic I felt with the Rolleiflex.
Nearly a decade later, I dusted off the Rollie and went out with Satie to shoot a test roll, just hoping that it still worked after all this time.
It did!
What made this experience even more special was that I was able to develop the film myself, which is a process I had never done before. This was made possible by generous help and gentle guidance from my friend @nick_shamblott.
I’m very excited to continue to develop my relationship with this camera and to share the images that it makes.
