On show during Unseen 2022: Carlos and Jason Sanchez — “The labour behind a still image is kind of similar to filmmaking, just in the production of it.” (In Borrowing Tape) (Dutch ⬇️)

During Unseen (16-18 September 2022), @TORCHgallery will show work by two Canadian brothers: Carlos and Jason Sanchez. The Montreal-based artist duo excels at visualising nightmarish tableaux with cinematic qualities. These often large scale pieces reflect our deepest fears and darkest thoughts and often carry an aspect of irrationality. The photographs tend to carry subtle details that require a second look. When you look at it for the first time, you’ll notice that in this tense scene ("Charlotte’s Hallucination”, 2022) the protagonist on the right seems to believe that the curtains are on fire, but the mirror — that’s supposed to reflect reality — doesn’t show any fire. But did you also see that the man is not shown in the mirror? Is he part of her hallucination? How does that reflect the relationship between these two people? The longer you look, the more details you’ll notice. The viewer is invited to fill in the details in these open ended, single frame narratives. The production process for these pieces tends to be quite elaborate and will often take place over several months. Carlos and Jason Sanchez have shown their work worldwide and their work has been collected by institutions including the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the National Gallery of Canada and the Musee de la Photographie de Charleroi.
