Wrongfully convicted of a nonviolent drug offense in 1997 and sentenced to life in prison, he began drawing and painting while incarcerated. President Barack Obama commuted his sentence and granted him a pardon in 2016. In his photorealist paintings, MR. WASH captures his subjects’ hidden burdens and emotions, expressed in large tears running down their faces. His subjects often include politicians, his peers, and celebrities like The Game.
