On 11 May 2022, while reporting on a raid by Israeli occupation forces (IOF) on the Jenin refugee camp, prominent Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akhleh was fatally shot in the head. An investigation by Forensic Architecture and @al_haq_organization brings to light new key findings related to the circumstances of her killing, which show the recent report on the incident published by the IOF to be false and deliberately misleading. Using previously unseen footage and advanced spatial and audio analysis, our investigation demonstrates for the first time that Shireen and her colleagues were explicitly targeted by an IOF marksman with intent to kill, despite being identifiable as members of the press; that the attack was unprovoked, there having been no shots other than the IOF’s fired at the time and no armed individuals in the vicinity of the journalists; and that Shireen was prevented from receiving medical attention after being shot. This investigation will be an addendum to a complaint to the ICC submitted by Shireen's family and colleagues this morning (20 September 2022) at The Hague.
