Yesterday @betweenthelinesus had the opportunity to speak at the Coach’s Conference for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation in Sacramento. Recreation Coordinators and coaches from each state prison across the state of California were all in attendance. We introduced our program to those who were previously unfamiliar and spoke about finding new ways to connect with the incarcerated population, the impact of recreational therapy, reintegration services, and many of the hurdles we face when trying to aid in the process of rehabilitation, amongst other things.
We were fortunate to be able to bring our brother Salvador along with us as well to share his testimony and give his insight as a former incarcerated individual who served 20 years in prison and participated in our program during the last few years of his sentence. He provided a unique perspective and opened the hearts and minds of everyone who had the privilege of hearing him speak. We could think of no better person to enlighten us on the needs of those on the inside as well as those reentering society upon release.
Collectively, we agreed that major changes need to be made to provide positive programming and resources for a population of people often forgotten about by society and we committed to working together towards bringing about those changes.
We want to send a huge thank you to Coach Heidi Wippel from Corcoran State Prison for the invite! We appreciate your selflessness and dedication to the people and we’re eager to continue building with you!
