It’s that time of year... deep in the shadows of Bartlett Cove lurks a small soft-bodied creature... [gasps], lo and behold, it’s the Christmas Anemone (Urticina crassicornis).
Fish, mussels, and snails...BE WARY! This opportunistic predator isn’t fussy about its holiday treat. Patiently waiting in its watery tidepool, this unassuming sea creature stings its prey and ensnares it with its tentacles. The Christmas Anemone is best witnessed during a negative low tide. Their cylindrical trunk may look like red and green slime when not in water. Danger can lurk while looking for this creature: sneaky waves can sweep you aaaawayyyy. 🌊
