New image sonification of the Carina Nebula’s cosmic cliffs for @nasawebb @nasachandraxray! In this left-right scan, brightness is mapped to volume and vertical position to pitch. The red nebula on the bottom is mapped to musical pitches (listen for the mountain range). The top is a typical inverse spectrogram with continuous frequencies and hence a more windy sound. Stars are heard as clicky piano-type sounds with extra crash cymbals for Webb’s distinctive diffraction spikes on the brighter stars. We released 3 new sonifications today, created in collaboration with scientists and a member of the blind community. This one is a more artistic approach meant to communicate the structure and texture. The others are more direct translations of frequencies of light into frequencies of sound.
