Someone recently asked me if I liked doing surgery. I immediately said yes, but was surprised by the question. It gave me a chance to ponder what it was I actually liked about surgery. I love the feeling of being able to fix & feel immediate gratification. I love the quiet. I love the brisk air. I love the monotonous humming of the machines & monitors. I love the routine from scrubbing to draping to timeout to marking out my incision, to cutting, to suturing, and finally ripping down the drapes.
I also thought about why I didn't choose another specialty- IM, peds, EM- even though I didn't love them- I am so glad there are people who take care of those pts. In medicine we respect each specialty & their recommendations. We don't assert our opinions or 3 months of knowledge from a medical school block on the expert w years of training & experience of practice. Anecdotal experiences may not be 100% evidence based data but they sure do count as well.
While it's ok to question, think critically and even recognize we have our own bias when information is given to us - I'm not sure where we lost our way in the mistrust of experts in the information we are assessing. If your car is making a noise- you take it to a mechanic. We trust them to diagnose the issue- we let them fix it even tho we don't understand the exact procedure. If you want to go blonde as someone with dark hair- we trust the colorist to bring us to that shade without frying our hair- we assume they understand the chemicals and color concoction being put on our scalp for 3 hours.
After initial shock learning about the heartbeat bill in Texas, it's clear once again we didn't trust the experts. The people who have devoted their whole lives to the field of obstetrics- the people on the ground in the clinics dealing with women and pregnancies all day long. The ones who not only understand anatomy & science but also understand the pain, grief & heartache in making certain decisions in regards to a pregnancy. We didn't ask them what they thought- or dismissed their expertise and put into law setting a precedent we can't take back. (CONT ⬇️⬇️⬇️)
