Link is also in my bio! “Part 3 of Not Just a Boys' Club follows photographer Ilya Sarossy and art director and competition climber Pia Graham as they create a photoshoot that explores themes of femininity in climbing for @badflowerpictures. We also delve into Pia's past as a competition climber and discover unsettling things about her experience in the competitive climbing scene.” - @the.big.initiative As I started to become a woman, my experience in the competitive climbing world changed. At 17, my coach propositioned me and that was the first of many interactions with men in climbing, who were all much older than me, who abused their positions of power. What was worse than feeling used by these men was being slut-shamed by my own community for it. If I expressed my femininity by wearing my hair down while I was climbing or short shorts or just a sports bra or hoop earrings, I was treated as though I was asking for male attention. I have been terrified of sharing my experience because I know that to some degree, I will be met with the very same attitudes that made me feel like I deserved to be treated the way I was, but I am sharing my experience now in the hopes that other young women in our sport don’t experience what I did. I know that I am not the only woman or femme-presenting person that has experienced what I have, and we shouldn’t have to feel so alone in our own community. I am bringing attention to the deep-rooted misogyny in our sport because I love rock climbing, and I want it to be the accepting, wholly empowering sport that I know it can be.
