Grunion are little fishies that spawn on the beaches of Socal and Northern Baja . Each year, between the months of April and June, hundreds to thousands of Grunion “run” onto shore after high tide to lay their eggs. During these months, coastal communities will gather at the shore, hoping to observe these little fish appear on our beaches.
“This year, the state has prohibited people from taking any fish in April, May and June, the peak time of the grunion run – adding June to the prohibition for the first time since 1949,” writes Katharine Gammon. Grunion fishing has dates back decades, but beach erosion, warming land temperatures and ocean acidification caused by global warming is now affecting Grunion egg viability.
The future of the Grunion is uncertain, but for now, we can still enjoy these runs, while we have them @guardian
