When @adobe asked me to create the splash screen for @photoshop 2025, my first proposal was this illustration. Although it wasn’t selected, I really liked the result, so I’m sharing my process for creating it…
1. Brief
After reading the brief and reviewing the reference they shared with me (a series of mine called Sol Negro), I had a clear starting point. I wanted to emulate classic botanical illustrations of birds and their habitat, so I chose an image of blue jays perched on a tree branch.
2. Image Search
I set out to find illustrations of birds from the 19th century, and I found two super cute images of an eagle and a white falcon.
3. Collage
Once I downloaded the images, I cropped them and started playing with the composition. One idea was to have the birds together. I added a branch with green leaves, some details of small flowers, and then integrated a vector element from Illustrator.
4. The intention was clear: to create a vibrant image. Bright, saturated colors that convey energy. I changed the greens to blues, added intense outlines around the birds with a brush, and added accents of color to enhance the contrast.
If you’ve made it this far, thank you for taking the time 🤍 I hope you find sharing my process useful and inspiring. Happy New Year! ✨
