Filmmaker @maliaaniston and co-director Danielle Patton scored big at the recent @49_hour_film_festival, snagging second best overall and best musical score for their coming of age comedy short, “The Sleep Over” — written, shot and edited in just 49 hours.
“We were the first female directors to win the competition,” Malia says.
The short film follows three high school girls at what seems like a normal sleepover. As they talk about boys, one makes a startling realization. “He goes to another school!” the cover art teases.
It’s a significant win for 27-year-old Malia, who’s only been directing for the last year, though her love for filmmaking dates back to high school when she’d make vlog-style clips with friends. Along her TV and film journey, she landed a PA gig for The Jimmy Kimmel Show, judged local film festivals and joined local film teams Simple Equations Media and Dwarf Star Films.
“I want to make this into a full-time career,” Malia says. “If I can spend the rest of my life just filmmaking, I’d be very happy. A few awards along the way are always a nice bonus, too.”
She’s been working tirelessly to make that a reality. She’s also working on “Contaminated,” a short thriller about lost relationships inspired by a dream she had. Not one to sit still, she’s also working on other business endeavors, including eco-friendly clothing company @blkwtclothing. As its name suggests, the line focuses on every day essentials in black or white, from undergarments to dresses. And it’s all made in DTLV.
“I feel like I’m really trying to find what I truly like and want in the best way possible,” Malia says of her many endeavors. “I want to experience everything I can in this life.” #HumansOfDTLV
