you know... I always tell myself I’m gonna keep it short and say something cool or aloof, but I’d rather keep it 💯 with y’all...
I haven’t released music in well over a year and although I feel the pressure here and there to crank out “stuff” ... I am 10000% aware that good shit takes time. And THIS is why. I never let anybody rush me through my albums. It’s a sacred process...like making a movie, like prepping for the Olympics.
My music is not really found on the big playlists... nor do I have 70 million fans if we’re being honest, but my listens aren’t purchased and come from true fans who listen. Repeatedly. It’s the shit label folks won’t be able to quantify when they demand new music right after your last drop.
Surely I can go in the studio with some writers/producers and whip up a record in a month.. but what I can’t do is showcase true growth...personal development, experimentation or evolution without knowing what to say. To connect, to relate to the person hitting play for years to come requires re-writing, carving, erasing and sometimes starting over.
I know it’s indulgent for me to say all this, but far more importantly I’m trying to make a point to all the A&R’s, managers and pressure cookers out there to which this applies: let your artists develop. If you truly believe in them for the right reasons, they will not disappoint you. Build careers instead of moments. There is a reason Zeppelin, Radiohead... Kendrick or Tame Impala take years between albums. It’s not an “old” way of doing things. It’s the tried and true GOAT way of doing things.
I have no interest in the content craze.. I make music for the soul. I want to build a legacy. A legacy of joy and meaningful art. Anyways, that’s my two cents and thank you all so much for giving a damn ♥️🫶🏾
