As 2022 draws to a close, we reflect on the incredible exhibitions shown at the Hammer Museum this year. Here you can see a performance by the artist collective Las Nietas de Nonó (@lasnietasdenono) in conjunction with their installation in the exhibition No Humans Involved. The performance and installation No More Tears (2021) are based on Las Nietas de Nonó’s ongoing correspondence with their cousins, the Salgado brothers, who were released after serving several years in federal prison. The work searches to find healing through movement and art. According to the artists, “The most important thing with this work is to bring to light to see the things that were previously hidden inside a dark room. Now there’s a room that’s illuminated.” The phrase “no humans involved” emerged shortly after the 1991 beating of Rodney King, when it was discovered that the Los Angeles Police Department was using the term as a shorthand for casework that involved Black and Latino men and sex workers. Scholar Sylvia Wynter asked her peers to think about how they might be part of the cultural way of thinking that led to this narrow definition of "human.” No Humans Involved presented works by contemporary artists that serve as response to Wynter’s prompt. This exhibition’s catalogue is available in the Hammer Store (@hammerstore). Follow the link in our bio to purchase!
