What is it that differentiates an artist from a content creator? In any other era, this is an obsolete question as “content creator” along with “influencer” were terms that hadn’t been made up yet Yet in an era of entertainment consumption, it arises So what is it that is the dividing line between artist and “content creator” Is it skill? Is it experience? Is it pliability? Or is it something much more indicative of who that person is as a human being? It’s a much simpler answer than you’d be led to believe Greed Greed for money, greed for attention, greed for recognition, greed for power, greed for expansion Now, there most certainly is a line between greed for money and knowing what one is worth, however that line is exponentially broader than some would like to make you believe An artist would rather make a “live-able” wage creating their art, their way, than make an excessive amount having to sacrifice their art There is also a broad line between wanting to be recognized for your work and wanting to be put on a pedestal You guessed it, there’s also a broad line between wanting to show the world the process and wanting to show the world YOU And lastly, the broadest line of all is drawn within the greed for expansion There is a massive and I mean unfathomable difference between wanting to see the whole world, and wanting the whole world to see you Many times, I find myself saddened and disappointed as I live within an industry waterlogged by content creators that simply want to follow a trend or make what’s hot, not artists Even more disappointing, is the amount of consumers that equate skill with being an artist. I know people in this industry, that truly have world class work that aren’t artists, just dollar chasers I also know people that are truly world class artists, and don’t share their work with the world Most disappointing is the amount of people that think they’re the other In a world of content creators that want more money, more recognition, more power, more expansion... Be a fucking artist
