LATE JUNE GERANIUM (the song title)
It’s the second chance in the coming of age narrative, or its the process of making mistakes and growing from them. Trying again, seizing the moment and going for it. The hopeful glory that summer can bring, and the gentle looming fear of death that keeps us in a quiet haste.
This was made a couple days before my birthday in June 2021. I was just playing those chords on piano and i’m sure was thinking about getting older, and had bittersweet thoughts conjure up. I wanted to make something that embodied that....
I share this now because I keep thinking about a guy I met the other night...and the whole night in general...it was such a psychedelic experience....from seeing church people fighting in the street, to hearing people speak into toilets and even seeing people making love on a bench in the rain...it was a fever dream of a night that I’m sure was trying to speak to me and my friend....and we met this guy, who I could see was bursting with anguish. It was all in his eyes, and it manifested as drive, desire, passion, hurt, egomania...and all in his words....at one point he spoke about how he has to be the greatest to ever do it, but he feels like he is running out of time. My heart wanted me to hold his hand and say take it easy, and that I empathise. But before that he got up in a haste and disappeared into the night....
Often times we are in a rush to get something or somewhere and we try to runaway from the vast wisdom of uncertainty. We can experience freedom in letting go and diving into that increasing void of ageing and experience, where life randomly gives out its many secrets...
