“From the slave ship to the Spaceship” is an installation that pays homage to the iconic Jazz composer and cosmic philosopher Sun Ra by expanding on his theory of Black folks being mythological creatures on earth, belonging to space. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The installation features a small painting that combines the colors of the Pan-African flag with a short poem entitled “My Myths” along with the incense-based sculpture, “If Sun Ra Gave Me The Keys To His Spaceship”. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The unconventional positioning of “My Myths” with the accompanying stool from Ivory Coast intends to place the viewer at eye level with the painting to reflect on Black folk’s lowest point in history (slave ships) and the endless possibilities of the potential highest point of Blackness (Afrofuturism, Afro-optimism, Space) that exist if we were to lift off from where Sun Ra left. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “From the slave ship to the Spaceship” is part of Lamar Robillard’s ‘Afrospirituality: Something Like A Phenomena’ curated by @usen_esiet and on view until May 27th.
